Bigger and Bolder: Three Ways Large-Format Porcelain Tiles Offer a Custom Design Solution

According to international tile and stone authorities, one of the "biggest" design trends that's become increasingly popular over the last year is large-format tiles. In its 2021 tile trend report, Coverings praises XXL tile for “enabling countless applications and design possibilities.”

Generally available in sizes 24” x 48” and up, oversized porcelain tiles are known for creating the optical effect of continuity and uniformity, making any space feel spacious and open. Not to mention, fewer grout lines means that large-format porcelain tiles make for an easy-to-clean surface. This big and bold tile trend offers a low-maintenance, custom design solution for a variety of applications.

Dreamy accent walls using large-format tiles

Large-format porcelain tiles, particularly those with riverlike striations (known as veining), can appear bold and dramatic or subtle and understated as a statement-making accent wall. For example, when installed across a master bathroom wall, large-format tiles can “bring a decadence that is associated with the most premium of hotels,” according to Homes & Gardens. The 2’x4’ module offered by the large-format in particular creates a stunning shower design. Also, since porcelain tiles are less porous and denser than other surfaces, they’re an ideal material for high-moisture spaces like bathrooms. Consequently, this also means that porcelain is uninhabitable to mold and mildew growth. Goodbye, grime.

Low maintenance floors with minimal grout lines

Because porcelain is incredibly resilient, large-format tiles are well-suited for high traffic areas like the kitchen, bathroom and hallway floors. An ideal combination, porcelain’s inherently water-resistant composition and subsequent resistance to chipping and scratching ensure long-lasting style. And with fewer grout lines to clean (and keep clean), surface spills from a sink or bathtub can be effortlessly wiped away with common household cleaning products. Minimal grout lines also help create a desirable aesthetic by bringing continuity between the floor and walls.

Harmonious connection to outdoor living spaces

Thankfully, one of the hottest home design trends from the past year – creating a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors – shows no signs of going out of style. Thanks to advances in porcelain tile manufacturing methods, using the same large-format tiles in both indoor and outdoor spaces is a design possibility within reach. Because porcelain holds up incredibly well to the effects of weathering, including rain and sun, the tiles installed across an outdoor patio or pool deck can visually match an adjacent indoor living room or kitchen, making the indoor and outdoor spaces of a home feel as one.
